The Doomsday clock has been being set since 1947
Many Young People today have never heard of the Doomsday Clock. Well maybe they have because Smashing Pumpkins wrote and performed a song by that name! But maybe they don’t know the reasons why it was set up in the first place and why they continue setting a time every year.
In 1947 a group of Atomic Scientists placed the clock at 7 minutes before midnight in a publication called The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists , with midnight representing the end of the world as we know it!
They have faithfully kept evaluating the threat to our planet from Nuclear Holocaust since 1947 to reflect on the state of affairs in the world.
The shortest was 2 Minutes before Midnight in 1953. I personally don’t remember why it was set so short. It could have been the tensions with the Korean War and China (Sound familiar only different?) and the possibility of a nuclear holocaust?
The longest was 17 minutes before midnight in 1991. This could have been significant because of the end of the Cold War or just that Ronnie Reagan was President!
The current Doomsday Clock is set at 5 minutes before midnight. The problem is that they have added a new factor besides Atomic Annihilation.
CLIMATE CHANGE!
I guess even this group recognizes that if we keep going the way we’re going in todays Modern World of the consumption of Fossil Fuels…that we could meet an ignominous end.
Read the following article/link concerning Climate Change and the Doomsday Clock from the International Business Times! The current clock is set at 5 minutes to midnight. Is this good or is this bad?
The question is, will we be able to turn the clock back anytime soon?
